Exploring how we tell stories on page and screen though review, retrospective and commentary.
Hello, and thanks for visiting. I’m glad you’re here.
I started writing The Haughty Culturist for personal reasons – but I won’t bore you with that. Instead, this site is an exploration of something that fascinates me: how we tell stories, and what they mean.
If this is your secret obsession too: welcome! There are a couple of ways to navigate the site:
To get alerts about new articles, follow the free newsletter on Ko-fi (lands at the end of every month).
thehaughtyculturist.com publishes original, deep-dive content about cult, classic and popular culture. New content lands weekly.

The theories, philosophies and opinions on this site are independent and organic, and I don’t speak for directors, cinematographers, authors or screenplay writers. Neither do I speak for any universal reader or audience.
That said, this site has grown from a respect and appreciation for film and literature, and the people who create our collective stories.
To that end, the site isn’t so much about value judgements (“is it good?”) as why, how and what content reveals about storytelling, myth-making and society.
Above all, read this site with an open mind – but find your own way and opinions.
If you’d like to support future ad-free, original and thoughtful content, you can donate on Ko-fi. Your contributions help pay for site hosting and running costs, and mean the world to me.
Thanks for all your solidarity, support, comments, shares and emails – it’s good to hear from you. Most of all, thanks for reading.
I’ve been a writer, journalist and editor for 20-something years, so I’ve spent a long time thinking about stories. I’ve written professionally about everything from books to bars, housing and sustainability, and an awful about going to university and money skills. But that’s all by the by because this site isn’t about that. It’s about this.
